Team of the Century
Peter Dempsey

Peter Dempsey
Peter Dempsey had power. It was an enormous, awesome power. He is the hardest hitter we have seen. He dominated the court and fairly cracked that ball to beyond the back line or onto the bottom brick. Peter was so quick and so cool under pressure. But he was more than that. It was the character of the man. It was the integrity and honour that he brought to matches. We think he may be the fairest player we have seen or played against. He used both hands beautifully (“I wish my left hand was as good as his,” says John Black left-handed Aussie raconteur and champion) and Peter conquered opponents. He conquered. Vanquished. But it was his manner, his deep respect, his humble enjoyment and his steely determination that made him so special to us all. We will remember opposition players looking high in the air as his driving shot flew over the long line. We will remember a champion bloke as well.
